Early in my career, I worked in youth services, investigating child abuse allegations. Naturally, I worked with foster parents and parents caring for victims of abuse and neglect. Later, I entered the school system, working as a therapist for young children and adolescents as well as evaluating children with mental health diagnoses to ensure they obtained appropriate school support services. Following this, I worked in a domestic violence shelter and a homeless shelter, counseling women and their children. In addition, I have worked in hospice care as the team social worker and volunteer coordinator.
After moving to Montreal in 2003, I worked in a home care setting. In 2005, I launched a business, Erickson Resource Group, and over the next 18 years, I was a forensic social worker, completing psychosocial evaluations to determine if individuals have the capacity to make decisions for themselves due to their Dementia, a chronic mental illness, developmental disability, intellectual disability or based on the Autism Spectrum.
Through these various clinical settings, I have worked with caregivers in in many capacities and am familiar with the challenges, demands, and rewards of caregiving.
I love how you break mental health down and simplify it. The information you provide often helps me feel less insane and hence stops the self-loathing vicious cycle so I just really wanted to say thank you!
Stephanie understands the struggles that family caregivers face as well as the ever-changing needs of care recipients. Her experience as a healthcare professional, caregiver, and patient advocate bring a unique perspective to the needs of patients and caregivers alike. Her determination and dedication to bringing important issues to light are what's needed to improve the system of care overall for this and future generations of caregivers and patients.
Even as an elder law attorney and author, I was woefully unprepared for the logistical aspects of eldercare. Stephanie’s knowledge of the needs of caregivers has helped me personally and I have passed on her knowledge to my clients.
